Putting Scottish textiles on the map.
Why? Because Scottish textiles isn’t currently a thing: it’s lots of things and I believe the sum of the parts adds up to a bigger whole.
And I love textiles and Scotland, makers and making.
What comes to mind when you think about Scottish Textiles?
Harris Tweed, Fair Isle knitting, Shetland wool, Tartan, Kilts, Tweed, Cashmere, Sheep.
Mills, looms, excellence, artisans, crofting and crofters, and maybe the water?
Scottish textiles is all of these things and more. And these things add up to something really special - which is what The Journal of Scottish Yarns is all about.
Scottish textiles is:
AGRICULTURE fibre producing animals and crops
FIBRE PROCESSING making yarn from fibre
MAKERS & PRODUCERS turning yarn into cloth and other products
RETAIL & CONSUMERS who sell and use the products
REUSE & RECYCLE products at the end of their life until they return to the land, enriching it in the process
LAND USE and its quality to support the next generation of fibre
All supported by our HERITAGE and dependent on RESEARCH & EDUCATION.
